Day 2 Camino Frances June 15, 2025

Day 2 of my camino opened with rain and fog. We had a longer walk today, about 17  km to the pilgrim hostel in Roncesvalles. Because I work up with lower leg pain, I was concerned about walking that whole distance.

Laurent arranged for the luggage shuttle to take me part way up the mountain to shorten the distance so I quickly got dressed and headed out alone. The rest of our group would walk up - I'd see them at the next albergue.

The shuttle drove up the mountain and dropped me off.

I was pretty much alone in the fog but did meet another female pilgrim. I asked her if she was walking to Roncesvalles and she said yes so we started  out together.  The road looked much like yesterday but much denser fog.

More rain today so I added my bright orange Altos poncho

We walked and I got ahead of her. After about an hour, I did not see her but contined walking. I saw another couple, also going to Roncesvalles.

Because they all wore bells I could hear the sheep and horses on the mountainside but could not see them until they suddenly appeared out of the mist.

But there were no Camino shell markers and I got concerned. I finally flagged down a rare car and asked the driver. He let me know I had missed the turn off for the Camino path becaouse of the fog and I needed to retrace my steps.

Rookie mistake not checking map or trail app. So I turned around and walked all the way back, now looking for the trail marker.

And there it was. The fog in this area had lifted and I could see it now.

Now only 9.9km to Roncesvalles.

I had found my way.
